Sunset Along the Congo River

The Congo River

This is what we see almost every night as we walk along the Congo River. It is beautiful. The boats that you see are dugout canoes called "pirogues," used by the local fishermen, who typically paddle standing up in their boats. The far shore is the Republic of the Congo; the river forms an international border. We cross the river on ski boats or houseboats when visiting our missionaries in the capitol city of Brazzaville. It is nice to be out on the water.

When we walk, there is almost always a wonderful breeze. If the wind is blowing just right, we can smell the smoke from the burning trash from what we refer to as airfills (not to be confused with landfills.)

The road on which we walk serves the residences of the ambassadors to the Republic of the Congo, including the residence of the ambassador from the United States.

Suzan and Gary are arriving today at 2 p.m. We are so much looking forward to seeing them. And, of course, taking them for walks along the river.
